Having been brought up in the beautiful Perthshire countryside I am fortunate to be surrounded by inspiring scenery, wildlife and historic properties. Three key interests of mine - aside from my family!
Art is something that has always been with me. As a child I was encouraged to paint, never thinking it could lead to anything more than an interest.
I pursued one of my passions and studied building conservation at university. During which I picked up my sketchbook for the first time in a while. I was told the only way to truly understand the built heritage was to capture it on paper, by studying the detail and its key characteristics. My lecturer always said this was better than taking a photo which was never to be looked at again.
Thats not to say I don't take photos! My inspiration comes when I am out walking, I always have my camera with me, it's habit, and when I am struck by a scene or a flower in the hedgerow, or an animal in the undergrowth or in the trees I quickly snap away before the moment is lost. I'm sorry but I can't paint that quickly!
Living on a farm my study in wildlife extends to the typical farmyard animal including my trusty laying chookies!
So when do I paint? When I'm not working and the wee man is napping. I pray the cleaning fairy is keeping the house in order (which is what I feel I probably should be doing instead!).
